The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal is located in Mangalore City, Karnataka State, India. Mangalore is the headquarters of the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada and boasts of being an important centre of business and trade in Karnataka state. The presence of an all-weather major port at Mangalore has seen rapid industrial growth in the hinterland covering large parts of Karnataka and extending upto the state capital Bangalore. Mangalore has also selected for establishment of Special Economic Zones and Information Technology Parks. Dakshina Kannada District boasts of 100 % literacy and is well known for its educational institutions.
Sr. U. Srinivasa Mallya, a visionary and Philanthropist contributed immensely to the development of the coastal region of Karnataka. Among many achievements to his credit, his effort towards establishment of the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (now NITK) at Surathkal is probably the most significant one. In recognition of his role as the founder and architect of NITK, the campus is named after him as "Srinivasnagar".
The department of electrical engineering was established right from the inception of the Institute that is August 6, 1960. The department runs under graduate programme in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, post-graduate programme in Power and Energy Systems.
